I’m Going to Have to Paint My Walls
10th April 2008
We’ve just been too rough on our house since we’ve lived here and I’ve come to the conclusion: we’re going to have to paint when we try to sell the house. They’re selling two homes on our street, so we’ll see how quickly they go (I doubt it will be quick). Does anyone have any tips for painting walls inside a home? I don’t want to do it for another year and a half, but having the tips now will help. Any cheap paint sources? There are random smudges in our stairwell and throughout the house (I think the last owners had sloppy movers).
I also will want to try to sell the house without a realtor. More to come on that in about a year…I just want to save the 6%!

We’ve been slowly painting our house for the last few months. We do it as time and money permits. The 2 biggest tips I can offer are:
Make sure you do a good job of taping off the baseboards, trim, etc…
and
Walmart’s “Color Place” brand of paint is the best bang for the buck. It is produced by Behr and rebranded.

Ralph - Thanks so much. I’m such a Walmart junkie anyway, so this is good advice for me.

Sure-edge! They are a little tool that make edging SUPER EASY. You can even skip taping-hooray! They only cost about $5 but you save that much on tape.

I’ll second the taping advice. You can make a bigger “mess” while painting and not affect the overall product! Seriously…before you paint everything, try a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the scuffs and bumps. It’s amazing what those things can remove…and they are much cheaper than paint!

My wife just found out yesterday at work that the Magic Erasers work on shoes too and sure enough she tried it last and they do!

I’ve never done this, but was told of this when I thought I might repaint. It was suggested to get primer (it’s a lot cheaper) and get it dyed the color you need it. Just an idea that I thought I’d share.

If you are painting the stairwell it is best to have a professional to do it because you’re more than likely going to have to paint all the way to the cieling edge.
Any paint from HD ,Lowes, and especially walmart hardly ever gets matched right to do just a touch up on the smudges.
My advice,
-Use Professional paint if you just want to touch up yourself.. Thats if walls are flat ( No shine)
- use paint from places mentioned above, do it yourself, save about 5 bucks a Gallon. Not to mention if your comfortable using an extension ladder for the stairwell.
- have a professinal do it and save your back and your time.

Any other questions go to—-diychatroom.com
I use to answer questions there diychatroom.com but
there is still a great deal of committed professinals, from all
trades that answer questions.

[…] I have read that some bloggers, like Brooke would prefer to handle the sale themselves. We appointed an agent and are very happy with her efforts. Still, I must mention that there was hardly any interest, until I followed FMF’s sound advice on not making the single biggest mistake of home sellers. […]
