New Work Clothes
20th March 2008
I haven’t been shopping in so long, so when I bought new work clothes a few years ago, I didn’t shop well. Here are some of my mistakes:
1. Not buying durable clothes. A lot of women’s clothes are pretty flimsy. If you have to do any type of work in them or if you keep them for longer than a year, they are pretty much worthless or get holes in them.
2. Not buying classic styles. Clothes that are faddish might look nice for a few months, but will definitely show their age a lot faster.
3. Not considering shrinkage/fit. I will try to buy clothes that fit well and won’t shrink in the future.j
4. Not looking at what I already have in my closet first. If you already have similar items in your closet, what’s the point? Buy something different.
5. Not searching out low prices to save my wallet. I just purchased the first things I saw, since I hate shopping and being in the mall.
6. Going to the mall. There must be a better work-clothes source than the mall. It just makes me uncomfortable to go in there.
Do you have any tips/mistakes? What is your best source of cheap/durable work clothes?
Now, does anyone know where I can find the best womens’ slacks and prices?

I don’t know what type of clothes you wear to work, but I have previously used JCPenney’s Worthington series of clothes for dress slacks. They are typically $30, but you can find them on sale for $15-$20 and they have proven to be pretty durable for me. I work as a manufacturing engineer, so I have to look professional, but not be afraid to get dirty. I don’t mind getting a pair of $19 washable slacks dirty when they hold up to multiple uses and washes.
Trust me though…I feel your pain.

@Kaye - I wear whatever clothes fulfill all the tips above. I will have to have a look at Penney’s catalog. Thanks so much for the tip.

I love, love, love Lands End for durable casual clothes. They aren’t cheap but they last for years. I also love Weekenders. I work in an office so I need dress clothes. Weekenders are soft and comfortable, all machine washable and mix and match. I look professional all day, but feel like I’m wearing my jammies and NEVER have to go to the dry cleaner anymore! I love these clothes so much I actually became a fashion coordinator for the company and now I get them at a discount, which is even better!!
