Each Wednesday, Dreamy and I are reviewing a chapter from Nickel and Dimed by Barbara Ehrenreich, where Ehrenreich does minimum wage jobs around the country to see if she can "get by" on minimum wage. Today's chapter is Chapter 2, about her work in Maine.

In this chapter, Scrubbing in Maine, Ehrenreich immediately found a job on the weekends as a dietary aide in a retirement home. One of the perks of this job is that when the residents were finished with their meals, the employees were allowed to feast on whatever food was left over and not served. I think this is a great idea. Finding a job with "unknown perks" is always a frugal idea, even if the meal cost $1 it's still a way to eat for cheap.

She applied for jobs doing anything under the sun to fill in the weekdays, and to afford the place she rented for $110 a week, which in my opinion is way too much for the one room she was renting. She found a job as a housekeeper for "Merry Maids" or something like that. After taking the personality test, this job as offered to her had a salary of $6.65 per hour. After two weeks of "exceptional work" (she even broke a clients vase while cleaning) she received a raise of $.10, to bring her salary to $6.75 per hour.

One thing that bothers me about her experiment is that she doesn't last at these jobs for more than 2 or 3 weeks. Most people who work these jobs don't have the luxury of "shopping around" like she does. I think it's unrealistic to move about so much, especially if she really was a low income worker and had to forfeit her security deposit on her apartment. Low income workers have to struggle to have clothes on their backs and food in their cabinets, and to me it just seems like to her it's a mini vacation with some work intermingled.

Ehrenreich actually doesn't have enough money for food in one part of this chapter. She calls several different food pantries in the area, and comes up with dinner and breakfast for one evening. I was a little confused on how she could think this was ethical for her to take a voucher that was meant for someone that was truly poor. I don't know if I could have done that. Or it is also possible that she was trying to make her work as journalistically realistic as possible - but it would still make me feel a little guilty.

Another thing that bugged me is that Ehrenreich always talked about the other workers having roommates. If Ehrenreich really wanted her story to be as realistic as possible, she probably should have had a roommate at some point in the story. I'm not sure if she was trying to conceal the fact that she was typing up reports each night or not, but I didn't think this was realistic. Everyone knows that an efficient way to save money is to start living with others, but obviously, that was "too much" for Ehrenreich.

Also, I found this article on MSN about minimum wage workers. It is interesting to see these days how much money minimum wagers make.

Check back every Wednesday for another Chapter of Nickel and Dimed.

OUCH! So, I've been looking for all sorts of ways to cut down on our electricity consumption. Help me out! Have a look at the list and tell me if I'm missing any tips:

1. Use the drying rack. The dryer is sucking all the humidity out of my house and wasting electricity.

2. Unplug chargers. I've been going around, unplugging everything when we're not using it.

3. Shorter showers. Using the timer used to work, but DS broke it (sabotage!). I've just been using my watch lately.

4. Turn the computer off. Our old dinosaur computer that DH uses to practice his keyboarding needs to be turned off, even if it does take almost an hour to boot up! Does anyone know how I can purge all my personal data off the hard drive before donating this computer? I want to get rid of it so badly, but am worried because all of our info is on there.

5. Don't keep doors open. "What kid, were you born in a barn!?!?" Refrigerator doors, front doors, doors to the garage...all these are guards to different temperatures and shouldn't be opened unless necessary.

6. Turn the heat down. I need to stealthily turn it down one degree more at a time to see if the boys notice. It's at 61 right now, any bets on how low I can get it?

7. Full freezer. I've been using empty milk jugs filled with tap water, but I'm also researching a 1/4 of beef to take this space. We don't eat much beef, so maybe some chickens? I don't know, but I know freezer space could be more efficiently used than just milk jugs to take up space.

That's all I can think of right now. My goal is to have my next electricity bill be under $100. I know this is a stretch as this month has been colder than last here, but I can have dreams, right? Give me some more tips so I can reach my goal!

DH has almost approved living in a quasi-RV, as promoted (once again) on Jacob's site. We really like the one with the closed bedroom, so we're actually thinking through all the logistics. DH is actively considering it, and I'm super-excited. Kinda funny what constitutes a frugal person's dreamhouse, hunh?

My two best friends think I'm insane. Whatever. I think it's insane right now that we have a 2400 sq ft home that has three rooms closed off. We'd never have to sell or buy a house again.

The biggest drawback for DH is that he doesn't want to sell all of our furniture. I'm not really sure what to say to that, except that it's all relative anyway. Any ideas on this would be appreciated. He's really considering it...I'm so excited.

Also, since DH refuses to let anyone ever help us, we are looking at RV campgrounds, and do you want to know another interesting thing? Most RV campgrounds are closed off to under 55 year olds!!! That's hilarious. But DH refuses to pay a friend to let us stay in their yard. Whatever...we'll find a good RV park.

I've been researching solar power panels and composting toilets, so that we could use the cheaper RV spots. These are going for $5 a day, $150 a month at the next place that we're probably moving to. I'm thinking the solar panels are going to cost a couple grand to implement, and the composting toilet thing is still a little vague for me. I need to delve into it some more.

Okay, so I know I'm opening myself up here, but what do you think? I think this could be the biggest feeling of freedom ever. Am I insane or is this the coolest thing ever?

DH is still concerned about whether a school bus will come pick up DS for school at an RV park. So, at least he's thinking about it!

Good morning! Dreamy and I are reviewing a chapter each week from Nickel and Dimed, with a new chapter each Wednesday. This is Chapter 1: Serving in Florida.

Barbara Ehrenreich is a reporter/columnist for the NY Times. She was put on assignment to find out what it is truly like to live on minimum wage in different areas of the country. In this first chapter, she is struggling to find a housekeeping job at several hotels in Florida. She started out with $1500 to put a deposit on an apartment, some food, and savings (which we know, is hard to do when you're making minimum wage.) She found a job waitressing at a hotel, and sort of thrived at it. Barbara made some friends, and tried to think of this as a real job, not just a temporary one for the column she was charged with writing. Several of these friends didn't know who she was, apparently she's a famous reporter. The kinds of jobs these people are in, just don't afford buying a newspaper, especially not the NY Times.

The things I found unrealistic with this chapter is that she was able to maintain her car, and a savings account. Most people, as evidenced in her book, slept in their cars (which didn't move from the parking lot they were in) and struggled to make ends meet. Some of those people worked two jobs just to keep what they had. Barbara also went on "vacation" back to her old life to pay her bills and check emails. That is just not a luxury that most minimum wage workers can do. I worked several minimum wage jobs, eating Ramen noodles and macaroni & cheese just to have food in my body. The idea that she has this alternate life to go back to, is just strange, and to not compromise on the car. Just not right.
Ehrenreich went into detail about how each of the employees lived. She mentioned that the hostess that always wowed Ehrenreich with her nice outfits was actually living in her car, as Dreamy stated above. The truth of the matter was that the outfits had been purchased at a Goodwill (or some similar thrift store), and the hostess was showering at one of the other employees' hotel rooms. Talk about thrifty! I know it isn't funny, but if someone really needed to save money, this would be the way. The hotel room stayer doesn't pay any extra for the extra water used for the showerer. Interesting...

In order to mitigate the rent prices in the city, Ehrenreich rents a "cabin" on the outskirts of town, about a 45 minute commute each way to work. This is extremely unrealistic, because, as Dreamy also stated, Ehrenreich kept her car, which is probably a lot more reliable than any of the cars purchased by the other workers. A minimum wage earner would have to work 34 weeks to earn enough money to purchase a 1998 model car. Most minimum wage earners owner older cars, that are not as fuel efficient or reliable as her car. If Ehrenreich were a minimum wage earner and her car broke down, she would be done, and I don't think this would be a decision that a minimum wage earner would make.

Check back every Wednesday for the next chapter of Nickel and Dimed.
